What Is Self-Custody in Crypto?

Self-custody means controlling the credentials that authorise activity for your blockchain assets. A crypto wallet makes those credentials usable, while safe recovery practices help you keep that control.

01

Wallets make self-custody usable

A blockchain records which addresses control digital assets. To move an asset or interact with an application, the owner must authorise the action with cryptographic credentials. A crypto wallet turns that technical process into an interface people can use. It can show balances, prepare transactions, and ask the user to confirm what will happen.

The wallet does not store tokens like a physical wallet stores cash. Tokens remain recorded on the blockchain. What the wallet manages is access: the keys or other authorised methods that prove a transaction came from the controller of an address. In a self-custody wallet, that control belongs to the user rather than an exchange holding assets on the user's behalf. Sweat Wallet is designed as a self-custody wallet, which gives users direct authority but also makes security and recovery an essential part of ownership.

A custodial exchange uses a different model. The exchange typically controls the blockchain keys and gives the customer access through an account. Password recovery and customer service may be easier, but withdrawals depend on the custodian's systems and policies. Self-custody removes that intermediary from key control. Neither model eliminates risk; they place responsibility in different hands. Understanding who can authorise a blockchain transaction is the clearest way to tell them apart.

Secret phrases and recovery methods

Many self-custody wallets use a secret phrase—also called a seed or recovery phrase—to restore access. The words represent powerful cryptographic information. Anyone who obtains the valid phrase may be able to control the wallet, which is why it should never be treated like an ordinary username or a low-value password.

Wallet technology continues to evolve, and a product may support additional access methods such as an activation link or a previously connected social login. Those methods do not change the central security question: which credentials can restore or authorise this wallet? Users should know which recovery methods they enabled and keep them protected. Sweat Wallet users should follow the current recovery instructions in the official Help Center because the precise login flow can change with product updates. Never enter a phrase after following an unsolicited message, and never send it to someone claiming to be support.

A secret phrase is not the same thing as the wallet address you use to receive assets. An address is designed to be shared, while a phrase or private key must remain secret. Confusing the two can be costly. Before copying wallet information, read the label and understand what the destination is asking for. A legitimate transfer may need a public address; it should never require the words that restore the entire wallet.

How to protect your wallet access

Self-custody removes the possibility of asking a custodian to reverse every mistake. If a secret phrase is exposed, a scammer may move assets before the real owner can react. If all valid recovery methods are lost, support may be unable to restore the original wallet. This is the responsibility that accompanies direct control.

Keep recovery information private and offline where practical. Do not post it, photograph it for cloud storage, paste it into chat, or share it with friends. Sweat support will not ask for a secret phrase, private key, backup link, or login code. Use official app-store listings and links reached from Sweat's website or app. Before approving a transaction, check the destination, token, network, and permissions. If a recovery method may have been exposed, treat the wallet as compromised and use current official guidance to move assets to a new secure wallet as quickly and safely as possible.

Phishing often creates urgency: a message may claim that a wallet must be verified, synchronised, or unlocked immediately. Slow down when a request uses fear or promises an unexpected reward. Open the official app independently instead of following the message's link. A transaction can also grant permissions rather than simply send a token, so read what the wallet says you are approving. A familiar logo on a website is not proof that the site is genuine.

  • Never share a secret phrase or private key.
  • Ignore unsolicited recovery offers and support messages.
  • Review every transaction before approval.
  • Keep more than one supported recovery route only when each route is secured.

Keep recovery information current

Security is not complete when a wallet is first created. Users should periodically confirm that they can identify their current recovery methods and that old devices or credentials are not creating unnecessary exposure. Sweat Wallet may allow a user to update a secret phrase or add supported login methods. When a phrase is changed, the newest valid phrase is the one that matters; an older backup may no longer restore access.

Do not rotate a secret phrase casually in response to a direct message or unfamiliar website. Start from the official app, read the current instructions, and make a secure backup before relying on the new method. Remember that resetting and connecting a new wallet is not the same as recovering the original one: assets do not automatically move from an inaccessible address. Good self-custody is a balance of control and preparation. Know what authorises your wallet, protect it from others, and make sure your future self can recover it through the official methods you intentionally set up.

It is useful to review recovery readiness after changing phones, adding a login method, or updating important security settings. The goal is not to expose the phrase during a casual test. Instead, confirm that your records clearly identify the current official recovery route and that no obsolete copy could mislead you later. If you are uncertain, consult official guidance before logging out or reinstalling the app, because losing the only working access method can make the original assets unreachable.
